Background:

Shot in one evening single-handedly in the quiet sleepy streets of Dublin, In Static is a study of the careful synchronicity of music and image. Taking a piece of music composed with a rich and atmospheric texture as the background to the film, the warm sleepiness of sine wave tones induce the main character, Man, into a sleepy haze. As he wanders out into the empty streets of his dream, strange and unsettling tones cause panic which eventually climaxes to the all-enveloping noise of wideband static. Anxiety and confusion are the themes at the heart of the project, while the tone suggests that even a strange dream can linger on, between the worlds of dreams and reality. The film was shot on a JVC GY-DV700W and edited using Adobe Premiere Pro. Written, starring, edited, directed and shot by Nick Carswell. The soundtrack was also composed by Nick Carswell.

Synopsis:

After a long day, Man has trouble staying awake and eventually nods off to sleep on the couch. The television plays only static and as he slips deeper into sleep, the noisy stream plays tricks on his dreaming brain.
