Dreamers & Weepers - So far....

After we made our crazy B-Movie horror short, Deadweed, I really wanted to try out some serious filmmaking in terms of story and acting. I had a particular concept stuck in my head and after explaining it to the lead in Deadweed, Pat Halligan, he only went off and wrote a bloody screenplay. (His first!) The idea had already been floated with another writer, but so quick was Pat off the bat, that I knew we just had to shoot it asap. We pushed it through seven drafts before it was ready, but its probably still not perfect. However as a story, its honest, bare, real and set against a christmas backdrop to frontload it with more dramatic effect for the audience. Ireland has enjoyed untold wealth and prosperity for many years. It has changed us as a nation. We probably don't appreciate how materialistic it has made us. How many marraiges were built on financial circumstances? What will happen to them when financial hardship enters the equation? There is an old saying about marraige, that my mother has repeated over the years. "When money problems come in the door, love flies out the window." In essence, Dreamers & Weepers is about that, but with a really cruel, yet relevent, sting in its tail. The film is still being shot in the Kildare area and has received no funding from state agencies. The final cut will be in Black and white as this choice best sums up its dark and downbeat narrative.
