The Shed Dublin

Description

THE SHED is a multi-functional installation piece in itself, as well as a large multi-functional space suitable for making and presenting multi-disciplinary work. It aims to stimulate a new and proactive way of connection between different cultural groups and local audiences, providing space for meeting, debate and incubation in the field of culture and art. It specifically promotes internationality and diversity as fundamental principles relating to the creative City. THE SHED is run by selected/eclectic External Curators that research and showcase cultural experiments, when not curated directly by The Shed’s promoter McBett. The principle is that Culture is like bread, something to be eaten daily by everyone. THE SHED supports little ideas and helps them grow regardless of previous experience , with no distinction between community and cultural contributions. THE SHED is a source of inspiration for audiences and artists. Its central location guarantees easy access and offers a large, adaptable and unique space to those with less facilities. THE SHED is not meant to be used but to be shared.

Naturally, Hafez is speaking about Egypt, where he was born in 1963, and has always lived, except for a long Parisian parenthesis, the country of his education (and hybrid formation): a country that is rather contaminated from the socio-cultural point of view: Cairo presents itself to the outside observer as a series of stratified elements of diverse origins, superimposed or squashed one against the other, without respect for their nature or origin, and without the least concern for the indispensable necessary time for transition, and hence, without any possibility for a harmonious re-composition. In Hafez’ words: “Egyptian society has been reshaped because of continuous changes since the mid-seventies, losing along the way some of its Oriental character, and acquiring instead other traits, some of which are part of the globalization process, others which are simply deviations of a consumer goods culture.” http://www.khaledhafez.com/home.htm MOUNIRA EL SOHL Mounira El Solh was born in Beirut in 1978. She studied painting at the Lebanese University in Beirut (LB), and Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (NL). Between 2006 and 2008, she was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Her work is multidisciplinary, osciliating between video, installation, writing, photography and painting. El Solh has been working on issues related to Lebanese immigrants, with both physical and mind-set manifestations, as well as Lebanese socio-political and religious conflicts. Her approach is not documentary but fictional, even fantastic. While transforming dramatic situations into ironical ones, she seems to be making conscious periodic parallells between socio-political issues and aesthetics. She frequently appropriates other artworks, and often metamorphoses into other characters and mainly fictional artists.
